They are motivated to overcome their substance dependence and find the power within themselves that will work to prevent them from relapsing in the future. Non-twelve-step programs can offer individualized approaches and procedures when it comes to treatment focusing on the patient’s unique problems.

Alternative treatment programs are often working to guide people to find their own ability and strength to remain sober so that they believe they can achieve their goals. These kinds of treatment programs offer support for patients so that they can make a commitment to living sober through their own power enabling them to make more productive life choices. The main belief behind alternative programs is that each patient needs an intrinsic motivator to make changes permanent and that without that motivation their change will only be temporary.

Non-traditional treatment programs can sometimes be more flexible than twelve-step programs because they are more individualized, adjusting treatment to each person’s pace and personal needs. The program might also adjust to ensure that the patient makes progress, changing when something is not achieving the desired results. Because all people are different, it is important to explore various options when it comes to recovery.

Although anyone can succeed in becoming sober, lasting change is easier when you choose an approach that fits you. Both twelve step and non-twelve step programs can be equally effective and they both want what is best for each patient’s long-term recovery. In the end, what matters is that you understand what different kinds of treatment are available and choose one that resonates with your own beliefs and what you want to achieve out of your journey in recovery.
