Drug Addiction

Drug addiction is classified as a chronic disease where an individual may not be able to stop taking the drug on their own. It can be identified by uncontrollable drug-seeking and continuing use, despite the damaging consequences to the brain. Addiction affects the brain in many ways which can be long-lasting and lead to dangerous behaviors. The areas of the brain affected by addiction include:

  • Learning & Memory
  • Controlling Behavior
  • Reward & Motivation

Risk Factors

It is not fully understood why certain people become addicted to drugs while others do not. Genetics have been linked to addiction, however, not all family members are at risk for developing a substance use disorder. Psychological factors such as abuse or extraordinary stress can contribute to the risk of drug abuse.

Psychological and environmental factors help influence whether a person starts participating in substance use. Meanwhile, genetic factors tend to determine if a person progresses substance use into an addiction. Adolescents are especially susceptible to addiction since the frontal lobe of their brain is not fully developed. Therefore, making drug use even more enticing for them.

  • Biology or Genetics
  • Mental Health Issues
  • Trouble at Home, School, or Work
  • Hanging Around People Who Use Drugs
  • Starting Using Drugs Young

It is important to note that because someone has one or more of these factors does not mean that they will develop an addiction. By having one or more factors positions them at a higher risk of developing one.

Addiction Treatment

The first stage of treatment often starts with detoxification with medically managed withdrawal. This is typically followed by a formal assessment for drug addiction treatment. Long-lasting recovery is not created by just simply detoxing. Behavioral, psychological, and social problems related to addiction need to be overcome. The client’s services will vary depending on their specific needs and typically consists of different programs, therapies, and medications.

Detox

Our detox program is designed to clear the body of substances while managing the acute symptoms of withdrawal. This process is done under medical supervision and should not be done alone. Experienced staff members provide treatment suitable to the client’s needs associated with their withdrawal symptoms. After completing our detox program, the client can focus on psychological, social, and behavioral problems without the physical issues related to addiction.

Sober Activities

Getting involved in a variety of activities is a good way to motivate individuals to stay sober. Activities are part of the clients daily schedule where they are able to socialize amongst each other and be active. Physical fitness is an important lifestyle for anyone, especially for people seeking recovery. Resources such as yoga, dance and physical trainers help strengthen the body, which in return helps strengthen the mind. It is important to replace old habits with new ones to achieve long term success.

Inpatient Rehab

After a client completes our detox program, they transition to a live-in facility or inpatient rehab program. Inpatient rehab provides medical assistance for the remaining withdrawal symptoms following detoxification. This highly structured facility is designed to create behavioral patterns for recovery. A person receiving inpatient treatment would be under 24-hour care. The residential program is a minimum of 28 days, but can be 90 days or longer depending on a client’s specific needs.

Outpatient Rehab

Outpatient treatment, or intensive outpatient program (IOP), can be a helpful transition from inpatient rehab to the client’s daily home lives. This program is ideal for individuals who seek addiction treatment and do not need to stay in a rehab facility. Ultimately, these individuals that cannot afford to spend the time at Dr. Paul’s by the Sea, can still achieve the same level of success. The most obvious difference between these two is that IOP clients are able to go home after their daily treatment is completed.

Family Program

Family members, loved ones, and friends are huge motivating factors for someone to enter addiction treatment. At Dr. Paul's By The Sea, we utilize a family program because we know how important it is for family members to be involved in the client’s care. It is especially important for them to be there for adolescent patients. Allowing family and friends to be a part of the program can strengthen and extend treatment benefits.

Dual Diagnosis

A dual diagnosis is when an individual is suffering from substance abuse and a mental health disorder. Our drug rehab center provides dual diagnosis treatment for people with substance use disorders that may also be dealing with stress, depression, anxiety, PTSD, or bipolar disorder. We recognize that the best programs provide a combination of services that meet the client's individual needs.

How long does drug rehab last?

There is no predetermined length of time for addiction treatment; patients will progress through the program at their own pace. Addiction is a chronic disorder, meaning short-term or a one-time treatment is not sufficient enough for recovery. Research has shown that good outcomes are dependent on suitable treatment lengths.

Individuals who participate for less than 90 days of inpatient and outpatient programs are limiting the effectiveness of treatment. Those who join for at least 90 days or longer are prone to a more successful recovery and maintaining positive outcomes. For most, this is a long-term process that involves continuous care.

One of the biggest issues faced with treatment programs is dropouts. Due to this problem, motivational techniques can be used to keep clients engaged in helping improve treatment outcomes. Successful programs often require multiple levels of care and readmitting clients who have relapsed.

How effective is drug addiction treatment?

According to the national institute on drug abuse, 1 in 13 people were in need of needed substance abuse treatment in 2017. However, only 12.2% of those people received the treatment they needed.

The goal of effective drug treatment is to stop drug use, stay drug-free, and enable those who have struggled with addiction to live a productive, healthy life. People who receive treatment for extended periods of time are more likely to stop taking drugs completely. They also have a decrease in criminal activity and improve their occupational, social, and psychological functioning. The effectiveness of the treatment is dependent on these factors:

  • the nature and severity of the addiction,
  • whether the proper treatments were arranged during the analysis,
  • the quality of the treatment.

Our rehab center utilizes different treatment services to have a positive impact on your recovery from addiction. We make sure to provide quality care, and offer an arrangement of services that meet the needs to overcome addiction. By joining Dr. Paul’s By The Sea, you are one step closer to receiving addiction treatment that is effective for you.

The recovery community at Dr. Paul's is very supportive and the staff is wonderful. I was free to be myself!
