Casual Drinking vs. Alcoholism

Casual drinking habits can very quickly escalate at a rapid rate and is a topic that should never be shrugged off since a full-blown addiction could develop suddenly and without notice. It is recommended that knowing what the warning signs and symptoms of alcohol addiction are so that when they become visible, the appropriate actions can be taken immediately before a more dangerous alcohol use disorder develops. Some of the common warning signs that are frequently seen have included:

  • Withdrawal symptoms when not drinking
  • Loss of appetite
  • Often inability to stop drinking
  • Hallucinations
  • Various infections being produced
  • Unexplained accidents or injuries occurring
  • Hiding alcohol from others
  • Blacking out from drinking too much
  • They are frequently making excuses for missing appointments, meetings, or other responsibilities.

Knowing what alcohol addiction feels and looks like is often challenging and complicated for family and friends, let alone the individual struggling from alcohol consumption. When others are aware of the common signs and symptoms of alcoholism, determining the right time and place to suggest admittance to an alcohol treatment facility becomes more transparent and more effective for all parties involved.

According to the National Institute of Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA), more than 86 percent of people in the United States reported drinking alcohol at least once throughout their life. It is widely common for many individuals to go out with friends, family, or even by themselves and enjoy an occasional glass of wine or other kinds of alcoholic beverages.

However, the catch is that some individuals are seen drinking much more often and in larger quantities. This should be addressed when heavy drinking or binge drinking is being done regularly or seen more frequently.

Types of Alcohol Abuse

The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) have characterized the different levels of alcohol abuse to be:

Binge Drinking

For this to be the level of abuse taking place, the individual would typically be consuming enough alcohol at a time that would bring the body’s blood alcohol level to 0.08 percent or more. At this percentage, you have become legally impaired.

Heavy Drinking

This level is often described as an individual having close to or a little more than fifteen alcoholic drinks throughout the week for men, and approximately eight drinks each week for women.

Alcohol Abuse

When someone shows signs of alcohol abuse, it typically indicates that alcoholic drinks are consumed frequently and often have numerous negative consequences. These may include damage to their relationships or causing physical harm to themselves and others.

Alcohol Addiction or Alcohol Dependence

Either of these characterizations are considered by industry professionals of being a chronic condition and psychological disorder that often produces extreme difficulty or apparent inability to stop drinking. These circumstances are challenging because the abuse usually continues even when the person is aware that the various issues developing in their life are being caused by their drinking habits.

Inpatient and Outpatient Rehab

After a client completes our detox program, they transition to a live-in facility or intensive outpatient program. Inpatient rehab provides medical assistance for the remaining withdrawal symptoms following detoxification. This highly structured facility is designed to create behavioral patterns for recovery. A person receiving inpatient treatment would be under 24-hour care. The residential program is a minimum of 28 days, but can be 90 days or longer depending on a client’s specific needs.

Outpatient treatment, or intensive outpatient program (IOP), can be a helpful transition from inpatient rehab to the client's daily home lives. This program is ideal for individuals who seek addiction treatment and do not need to stay in a rehab facility. Ultimately, these individuals that cannot afford to spend the time at Dr. Paul’s by the Sea, can still achieve the same level of success. The most obvious difference between these two is that IOP clients are able to go home after their daily treatment is completed.

Family Program

Family members, loved ones, and friends are huge motivating factors for someone to enter addiction treatment. At Dr. Paul's By The Sea, we utilize a family program because we know how important it is for family members to be involved in the client’s care. It is especially important for them to be there for adolescent patients. Allowing family and friends to be a part of the program can strengthen and extend treatment benefits.

Dual Diagnosis

A dual diagnosis is when an individual is suffering from substance abuse and a mental health disorder. Our drug rehab center provides dual diagnosis treatment for people with substance use disorders that may also be dealing with stress, depression, anxiety, PTSD, or bipolar disorder. We recognize that the best programs provide a combination of services that meet the client's individual needs.

Addiction Therapy

Our recovery center just south of Jacksonville offers a variety of therapies for our clients. Therapy is used to modify drug-related behavior and to increase the skills needed to overcome the craving for drugs. Therapy approaches are many and varied, with some going back decades. We only use evidence-based research for our therapy programs.
